SURFSIDE - In what is believed to be the earliest sports contest in the history of Ilwaco High School to start a school year the Fishermen golf team defeated Ridgefield 337-364 in an 18-hole match Aug. 26 in Surfside. Medalist honors went to Patrick Whealdon with a 79, Ridgefield's Brett Johnson fired an 84 and then it was all Ilwaco as freshmen Clark Wilson and Anthony Yoder came in with rounds of 85 and Ryan Tapio shot an 88.Elias Blume fired a 106 in junior varsity competition and Kenneth Sheldon shot a 94 and Taylor Schisler a 106 in middle school exhibition match play. Coach Dan Whealdon said, "The weather was superb and this was a great way to get our season underway. It showed that our freshmen know how to compete and I'm excited about the upcoming season."
